IOMP was formed in January 1963 with 4 affiliated national member organizations.

The main objective was and still is to organize international co-operation in medical physics and to promote communication between the various branches of medical physics and allied subjects and to contribute to the advancement of medical physics in all its aspects. The Organization has made a lot of progress since then. It has grown to a membership of 80 national member organizations and 6 regional organizations representing more than 18000 medical physicists worldwide.

One of the most important accomplishments of IOMP is that medical physicists are recognized as professionals in the medical and health community and by major international organizations such as IAEA, ILO and WHO. IOMP will meet in Brighton, England in 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of her formation.

IOMP will take the opportunity to review her past experience and successes and to form a global alliance in promoting further the standard of practice of medical physicists on a global basis, thereby widening the recognition of the MP profession to the general community as a whole.
