Outgoing IOMP Committee Chairs

IOMP is grateful to the following Committee Chairs who have served over the past period of 3 years (2009-2012)
Dr. Harald Paganetti is currently the Director of Physics Research at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. He received his PhD in experimental nuclear physics in 1992 from the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, Germany, and has been working in radiation therapy research on experimental as well as theoretical projects since 1994. He has authored and co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and is renowned particularly for his work on proton therapy.
Dr. Paganetti has been awarded numerous research grants from the National Cancer Institute in the United States. He serves on several editorial boards and is a member of task-groups and committees for various associations such as the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, the International Organization for Medical Physics, and the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute.

Maria do Carmo Lopes, PhD., is Head of the Medical Physics Department of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Coimbra (IPOCFG, E.P.E.), with 20 years experience in Medical Physics, with special interest in Radiotherapy. She is Coordinator of the Medical Physics Division of the Portuguese Physics Society (2005-2012) and National Member Officer of EFOMP since 2005. Dr Lopes is a member of the Physics Committee of ESTRO (2005-2011). Dr Lopes stated: My fight in the last few years was a national fight for improving Medical Physics status in Portugal, a small and peripheral European country. The invitation that I received three years ago to chair the ETC committee was indeed a big jump from a local reality into a worldwide perspective with developed as well as developing countries needing global perspective and guidance on education and training for medical physicists. It has been a continuous challenge that I have faced with the help and experience of a great team.

Dr Donald G Frey, FAAPM is Director of Diagnostic Physics at the Medical University of South Carolina, USA. He has served the AAPM in many capacities with distinction, including election to the position of President in 2004 followed by a one-year term as Chair of the Board of Directors. Dr. Frey has held many offices in other national organizations, including Trustee of the American Board of Radiology. At the international level, he is involved in the European Society for Radiology, the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics and the ICTP International Medical Physics College. Dr. Frey has published over 100 abstracts and has had 32 publication in peer reviewed journals. He has published 11 books/book chapters.
